Dell XPS 8930: Review of the Special Tower Edition

Dell xps 8930

DELL XPS 8930 is a high-end desktop PC with 8th generation Core i7. The DELL main model, which is also strong in digital content applications such as images and videos, ensures parts expandability and stable long-term operation. Recommended for those who want to use it for a long time in the future.

You can choose either GeForce GTX 1060/1070/1080. Not only PC games but also 3D production and video editing will be effective.

Following the Dell XPS 8920 at the beginning of the year, with the update of Intel’s eighth-generation Core processor, the latest XPS 8930 series will be released, fully upgraded to the eighth-generation Core processor platform, complemented by the powerful GTX 10 series. The graphics card makes this series more comfortable in the face of gaming applications.

There are a total of seven models in the New XPS Tower Special Edition. The main difference between each is the type of dedicated graphics, but only the top model has a Core i7-8700K that supports overclocking on the CPU.

Luxury Design

Dell XPS 8930 is a standard desktop PC called “Mini Tower Type”. The point is that it is more space-saving than the middle tower and has better expandability and cooling performance than the slim and compact types.

The design is simple but luxurious, and it doesn’t feel uncomfortable when used at work as well as at home.

The top is equipped with a fan

In addition to the heat dissipation design on the side of the chassis, the rear end of the chassis is also designed with a cooling window, and the fan is designed accordingly.

For a host equipped with a GTX 1080 discrete graphics card and a Core i7 8700K processor, the good thermal design is still very necessary.

Rich Interface

The New Dell XPS 8930 has an extremely large number of interfaces and has 11 USB ports in total.

Front interface

  •  Power button
  • SD memory card slot
  •  Headphone output / microphone input
  •  USB3.1 Gen1 (Type-C)
  •  USB3.1 Gen1 (full size)
  • Optical drive

Rear I / O panel interface

  • USB2.0
  • 1000BASE-T compatible wired LAN
  • DisplayPort (not used)
  • HDMI (not used)
  • USB3.1 Gen2 (Type-C)
  • USB3.1 Gen2 + USB3.1 Gen1 × 3
  • Audio port

For video output, use the terminal on the graphic board. GeForce GTX 1060/1070/1080 all have the same configuration.

Video output terminal

  • DisplayPort 1.3 (1.4 compatible)
  • HDMI 2.0
  • DVI-D

The optical drive is a Blu-ray Disc drive only for the upper model, and the DVD Super Multi Drive.

Easy to maintain without tools

The Dell XPS 8930 Tower Special Edition allows you to remove parts without using a screwdriver or other tool (some parts require a screwdriver). Since the interior is relatively wide and easy, parts replacement and maintenance are easy.

Power consumption

Although the power consumption at low load is not so high, the power consumption is considerably high in processing using GPU and processing that places a high load on the CPU. However, to achieve high performance, there is no help for a certain amount of power consumption.

By the way, the result of the 3D game is 174W, but this is measured with FF14 bench. The higher load of Assassin’s Creed Origins reached 240W. The FF14 bench may be too light for the GeForce GTX 1070.

Average power consumption per minute

Waiting Watch video Video conversion 3D game
29.4W 36.6W 176.4W 174W

The drive sound

The drive sound has become extremely loud at a maximum of 66.1dBA during video conversion that puts a heavy load on the CPU. The sound is too loud and interferes with the work.

As with the power consumption test, the FF14 bench is used for verification of 3D games, but the sound is considerably louder in heavyweight games with heavy loads.

For example, Assassin’s Creed Origins was up to 51.9dBA at 4K resolution and up to 56.5dBA at full HD resolution. The higher the load, the lower the sound, so the performance may have been adjusted for some reason.

Drive sound measurement results

Power off 36.8dBA
Waiting 39.7dBA I hear a little rotating sound
Watch video 39.8dBA Same as above
Video conversion 66.1dBA Rotating sound and exhaust sound are very loud
3D game 44.3dBA Rotating sound is clearly audible but not loud

Dell XPS 8930 CPU temperature

The maximum temperature of the CPU is 96 degrees at the time of video conversion, which is a fairly high sound. However, since the fan is rotating strongly, the influence on other parts may be small.

Startup time

When the startup time (the time from when the power button was pressed until the desktop was displayed) was measured, the result was 20.2 seconds.

It’s reasonable for an SSD-equipped machine but much faster than an HDD-equipped machine.

Dell XPS 8930 Storage performance

The storage access speed measurement results are as follows. 256GB SSD is connected with PCIe NVMe, and sequential read is very fast.

However, the access speed for sequential writes has dropped. HDD access speed is faster than average.

The 4K speed, which strongly affects the comfort of Windows 10, is excellent, so you can work without stress. During the actual trial, file access and Windows 10 operations did not frustrate.

Built-in SATA port

The motherboard has a total of 4 SATA ports. Two of them are used for custom hard disks and optical drives, so two ports are available. It can be used when installing a hard disk in the lower hard disk bay x 2 introduced above.

Dell XPS 8930 CPU performance

The Core i7-8700 used in the Dell XPS 8930 is an 8th generation Intel CPU that runs on 6 cores and 12 threads.

Compared to the 4-core 8-thread Core i7-7700 used until recently, the CPU performance has been greatly improved.

When the CPU performance of the New XPS Tower Special Edition was measured, the results were almost the same as other Core i7-8700.

It will be very useful for 3D production and video conversion. By the way, CPU performance itself is almost the same as XPS Tower.

3D performance

The GeForce GTX 1070 used in the trial machine was originally intended for the high end, but GPUs with higher performance such as GTX 1070 Ti and 1080 Ti have appeared, and now middle-high It is positioned at the top. If your graphics performance is very high and your budget allows, start with this class.

Basically, it is a performance that allows you to enjoy great games with full HD without stress, but depending on the title, you may want to adjust the image quality slightly.

Medium-sized games are a bit tough at 4K, but WQHD will play comfortably. A lighter game is comfortable even at 4K.

Using dGPU functions not only speeds up 3D production and 3D effects in graphic software but also reduces the time required for video conversion. High-performance GPU is useful not only for games but also for creative tasks.

VR performance

In the test to measure VR performance, it has been found that VR content such as Oculus Rift and HTC Vive can be enjoyed comfortably.

There is no problem with Windows Mixed Reality. Recently, the price of Windows MR Headsets has dropped, so it’s a good idea to purchase this opportunity.

Dell XPS 8930 High-end desktop PC

GeForce GTX series PCs may have a strong image for games. However, the use of a high-performance GPU not only makes game drawing smooth, but also speeds up 3D effects and video conversion, and has the advantage of making 3D production comfortable.

With the 8th generation powerful Core i7-8700 / i7-8700K New Dell XPX 8930, you can expect more comfortable work. In addition, the stylish design of the main unit cannot be overlooked. The LED does not shine like a gaming PC, and it is a standard but luxurious design. If you want a PC with high 3D performance, but the gaming PC is weird and hard to buy, why not consider the New Dell XPS 8930 Tower Special Edition?

Evaluation summary

Compared to the previous generation Dell XPS 8920, the Dell XPS 8930 has no change in the chassis mold used.

However, after upgrading the Core i7 8700K, thanks to the multi-core, multi-threading capabilities of the new platform, it has a more comfortable performance in dealing with large games.

Of course, the GTX 10 series alone also helped this product to become an excellent gaming desktop computer.

In addition to the GTX 1080 alone in this evaluation, the GTX 1070 and GTX 1060 are available in a variety of configurations. Users can choose the product that suits them based on their actual budget.
